Kanhirangad Sree Vaidyanatha Temple is one of the ancient, renowned and holy temples in Kerala where Lord Shiva is being worshipped as Vaidyanatha. The legend is that after the "Deva-Asura War", for removing the ill-effects of the consumtion of "Kalakooda Visham" that happened to errupt during the course of churning of 'Palazhi', Lord Parameswara installed His own 'Atmalingam' at Kailasam and worshipped by 'Go-ksheera-abhishekam' (Pouring of Cow milk) and as a result. He was liberated from the ill - effect of the consumption of powerful, ruinous poison (Kalakooda Visham) and after passage of time, on the advice of Maharshi Narada, Lord Aditya worshipped Lord Parameswara for liberation of His illness and on being pleased on Aditya, Lord Parameswara presented this  'Atmalingam' to Aditya who took it to the
Earth and installed here and worshipped with 'Goksheerabhishekam' and as a result Aditya got liberated of His illness and regained His full brightness. Hence the devotees are worshipping Lord Shiva as
'VAIDYANATHAN' here.

Since Lord Aditya installed the 'Atmalingam' here on the 6th day of a Malayalam month which happened to fall on Sunday it is known as "ARUM NHAYARUM".(ആറും ഞായറും ) And whenever the 6th day of any Malayalam month falls on a Sunday, that day is being celebrated here as a very auspicious day. Since Lord Aditya worshipped the 'Atmalingam' on a Sunday all Sundays have assumed importance in this Temple.
